EMPS-9 to be held in Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland, April 25-26

Registration is now open for EMPS-9, an international workshop to promote the development and awareness of materials and manufacturing processes utilised for spacecraft applications

The effect of the space environment on the reliability of electronic materials and devices is of continuous concern and discussion as we strive to innovate for future mission requirements that are experiencing rapid advances in the performance requirements for scientific instruments and to meet regulations to mitigate the environmental impacts of space programmes.

Our knowledge needs to be continually expanded in order to improve the design, reliability and safety of launchers, spacecraft and space instruments.

Electronics Materials & Processes for Space (EMPS) Workshops promote the development and awareness of materials and manufacturing processes utilised for spacecraft applications, and provide an opportunity for international industrialists, technicians and students to network together, and with members of the space community.

Organisers include members of staff from the University of Portsmouth School of Engineering, which initiated the Workshops in 2010, and from the European Space Agency (ESA). They are held at least once a year, typically at the site of an ESA-Approved Skills Training School and recent venues have included DLR Oberpfaffenhofen in Germany, Portsmouth University in the UK, and ESA/ESTEC in Noordwijk, The Netherlands.

EMPS-9 will be hosted by the Swiss Welding Institute (SWI) at Y-Parc in Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland from 25-26 April 2018. It will feature around 20 presentations and the focus on this occasion is high‐reliability manufacturing of electronic assemblies intended to withstand assembly, storage and ground test conditions and the conditions imposed by launchers and the space flight environments.

One of the primary objectives of the Workshops is to foster the discussion and exchange of knowledge among the industry and research centres actively involved in space applications and other high‐reliability electronics and to this end, students and trainees are encouraged to attend and to submit a proposal for a poster presentation.

Members of the public are welcome to participate in EMPS events but when numbers are limited, priority is given to specialist engineers and scientists in the fields of spacecraft materials, components, manufacturing and the space electronics industry.
